This guide is intended for all employees of the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin).
It describes step by step how to apply for and download an S/MIME certificate for the official email address.
With this certificate, it is possible to digitally sign emails and PDF documents to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the content.
Please follow the steps below to apply for an S/MIME certificate.
Each step is accompanied by an appropriate illustration to clearly demonstrate the process.
To apply, you will need your HWR login credentials as well as a current web browser.
1. Open the following website to start the certificate application:
2. Klicken Sie auf der Startseite auf „Academic Login“.

3. Select University
Choose “Berlin School of Economics and Law” from the list.

4. Login with HWR Credentials
Log in using your personal HWR login details.

5. Navigate to the “Email” option in the left menu.

6. Select Certificate Type
Choose the option “For enterprises or organizations (IV+OV)” (see image).

7. Verify Data
The following information will be checked. Confirm each by clicking “Next“:
- Your official email address
- Your first and last name
- Details about the university

8. Validation of Your Email Address
To receive an email to validate your email address, please click on “Next“

9. Proceed with the certificate order
Check the box to agree that you have read and accepted HARICA’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Then click “Submit” to send your certificate order.

10.You will receive an email at your official HWR address. Click on the “Confirm” link.
Please note that the confirmation email may end up in your “Junk Mail” or “Spam” folder.

11. After clicking the link in the email, a webpage will automatically open for further processing. Click “Confirm” there again.

12. Click on “Enroll your Certificate” (see image) to start the registration of your certificate.

13. Set Password
Create a secure password for your certificate.
Enter the password under “Set Passphrase” and again under “Confirm Passphrase“
Important: Keep this password safe, as it will be needed for later use.
Then check the box and click on “Enroll Certificate“

14. Save Certificate
Your certificate is now being created and is ready for download.
Save the file securely, ideally on your H-drive.

15. Use Certificate
Use the downloaded certificate file along with the password set in Step 13 to integrate the certificate into Outlook and Adobe Acrobat.
